The Comparison of the shares of stopping power in a soft tissue-equivalent material

Introduction: Proton therapy is a type of radiation treatment that it uses protons to treat cancer. Because of the protons’ unique ability to distribute the radiation dose more directly to the tumor, it minimizes the damage to nearby healthy tissues. The rate of energy loss by the ion in the target is called stopping power. The total stopping power is sum nuclear and electroni...

Proton Accelerator Development in China

The China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) and the Chinese Accelerator Driven Systems (C-ADS) projects are both underway in China. The CSNS includes a 100 kW RCS accelerator and first beam on target is planned for 2017. The C-ADS project includes a high power superconducting linac with a low energy (25-50 MeV) initial stage by 2015 and higher power deployment later. In addition to these intense...

High-power liquid-lithium jet target for neutron production.

A compact liquid-lithium target (LiLiT) was built and tested with a high-power electron gun at the Soreq Nuclear Research Center. The lithium target, to be bombarded by the high-intensity proton beam of the Soreq Applied Research Accelerator Facility (SARAF), will constitute an intense source of neutrons produced by the (7)Li(p,n)(7)Be reaction for nuclear astrophysics research and as a pilot s...

Fermilab Proton Accelerator Complex Status and Improvement Plans

Fermilab carries out an extensive program of accelerator-based high energy particle physics research at the Intensity Frontier that relies on the operation of 8 GeV and 120 GeV proton beamlines for a n umber of fixed target experiments. Routine operation with a world-record 700kW of average 120 GeV beam power on the neutrino target was achieved in 2017 as the result of the Proton Improvement Pl...

Carbon and Mercury Target Systems for Muon Colliders and Neutrino Factories*

A high-power target is required to convert a powerful MW-class proton beam into an intense muon source or neutrino source in support of physics at the intensity frontier. The first phase of a Muon Collider or Neutrino Factory program may use a 6.75-GeV proton driver with beam power of only 1 MW. At this lower power it is favorable to use a graphite target with beam and target tilted slightly to...
